Western swing meeting Irish reels, gypsy jazz catching Eastern European melodies, Arabic tunes watching over salsa beats and tabla putting a spring into ska fueled klezmer.

MALARCHY

Supported by the Backbeating Soundsystem

Fri. 26 September

10pm-3am

The Brasserie of the Royal Pier, Aberystwyth

Malarchy play a devious brew of trans-European travelling sounds, stirring spirits and guiding lovers onto higher plains. Enthusiastic European roots rhythms from this quintet, destined to lift the weariest souls and have us all dance-floor bound before we know it. Centuries of tradition collide with contemporary styles throughout the songs.

The five-piece consists of guitar, violin, accordion, bass, and percussion and only very occasional singing or whooping. They are at their best when, halfway through the set, they launch into some Klezmer - guitar, bass and percussion combine into one powerful and infectious rhythm section, encapsulating nightfall and its mysteries and allowing the violin and accordion more freedom to explore the music and scales.

Malarchy are the history of rhythm and harmony, topped off with measures of jazz and moonlight. This style of music seems to have an appeal as near to universal as anything heard - the raw emotional impact seems to transcend cultural and national boundaries. Perhaps this is not surprising, given that the Gypsies and the Jews who gave so much to this music must be two of the most travelled peoples in the world.

Tickets: £7 in advance/ £9 on the door.

LaXula

Supported by the Backbeating Soundsystem

Fri. 10 October

10pm-3am

The Brasserie of the Royal Pier, Aberystwyth

LaXula leads audiences on a journey of wonder and decadence. Songs drift effortlessly from the dusty sun-baked routes of Southern Spain to the urban vibrancy of the East London underground. There is a plaintive fiesta of influences from Flamenco to Arabic, Tango to Roma, laced with indie-rock psychedelia… the result is a uniquely dark and beguiling sound, that sounds oddly new and familiar at the same time.

Deeply routed in an ancient feminine spirit, this travelling band of captivating musicians and alluring performers present sensuous and bewitching music, with a remarkable stage presence that brings together neo-burlesque glamour and gypsy defiance. Fronted by charismatic lead singer and songwriter Monte Palafox, LaXula come across as a very powerful live band indeed.
